SHANGHAI DESIGN WEEK & WDCC 2023
A huge thank you to the extended team at Shanghai Design Week (SHDW) and the World Design City Conference (WDCC) for the opportunity to visit Shanghai and to experience so many aspects of your wonderful city. On behalf of London Design Festival, this trip focused on the alignment of London and Shanghai as “design friendship cities” and we can’t wait to see how the relationship develops over the coming months and years.
In 2010, Shanghai joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and was awarded the title of “Creative City of Design". Shanghai Design Week (SHDW) made its first debut in 2022. It is a pivotal milestone not just for an ambitious urban development initiative for Shanghai but also a testament to the vital importance that design as a new primary driver plays for the evolution and resilience of our global city. Organised and guided by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, SHDW will be performing as a multidisciplinary design event organiser that fosters and celebrates the industrial transformation of excellent designs and an integrated design platform that visualises an inclusive, innovative, and integrated city of Shanghai.
Ranked as one of the “top 10 fashion capitals in the world,” Shanghai launched their major fashion event to celebrate global fashion design - the Shanghai Gala. The red-carpet event celebrated the opening of their fashion design exhibition called “A New Vision of Design”. It was a wonderful experience and a real highlight from my time in Shanghai.
